An uninsured motorist is a driver without auto insurance coverage. Allstate's uninsured motorist coverage can help you pay for medical expenses or damage caused by a driver who is uninsured. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage is required in some states and optional in others. Some states also offer uninsured motorist property damage coverage.
An underinsured motorist is someone who has car insurance, but their liability coverage limits aren't high enough to cover an injury as a result of an accident they cause. The specific definition of an underinsured driver varies by state. If you are hit by one of these drivers, the underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy may help pay for the damage. Underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage is required in some states and optional in others. Read your policy or check with your insurance agent to learn more about this coverage and how it works.
Comp (a.k.a Comprehensive or Other Than Collision) and Collision are physical damage insurance coverages on a personal or business auto insurance policy.
Collision coverage provides reimbursement for damage to your vehicle after you’ve been in a car accident in which there is no fault or you are at-fault. Comprehensive provides reimbursement for a set of named perils that include, fire, hit an animal, falling object, etc.
Whether you’re a first-time driver or have been driving for years, one of the most important things is to make sure you have is adequate car insurance coverage. Depending on your state, the minimum amount of required car insurance differs.
However, the minimum amount of coverage required by law is usually not enough to fully cover the costs of an accident and experts recommend that drivers purchase additional coverage beyond the minimum requirements. If you don’t have enough coverage, you may be left with costly medical bills and expenses.
